“The Global Society of Tigray Scholars and Professionals (GSTS) would like to express its grave dismay at Meta’s mishandling of hate speech and incitement to violence spread on its Facebook platform that has contributed to the ongoing genocide against the Tigrayan population in Ethiopia.

The extremist Amhara militia and Fano vigilante group have used Facebook to freely spread calls for the ethnic-based mass killing of Tigrayans. According to a CNN investigation, Facebook knew about the spread of such posts calling for the massacre of Tigrayans but shamefully chose inaction. Moreover, whistleblower Frances Haugen revealed, “what we say in Myanmar and are now seeing in Ethiopia are only the opening chapters of a story so terrifying, no one wants to read the end of it,”. Haugen added that Facebook was “literally fanning ethnic violence in Ethiopia.

Tigrayans in the Amhara region and other parts of Ethiopia have particularly been victims of the killings following hate speech spread on Facebook. Oftentimes, the violence-inciting content is spread along with images of Tigrayans. A relative of one of the victims said “The worst thing that contributed to their [10-11 massacred Tigrayans] killing are the so-called activists who have been spreading hate on social media.”

Tigrayan advocates have diligently reported hate speech and content inciting ethnic-based violence spread by extremists from the Amhara region. However, no tangible action has been taken on the majority of the content. GSTS believes this is due to one or a combiantion of 1) Facebook’s deliberate policy of inaction; 2) a non-existent or dysfunctional contact monitoring team for Ethiopian languages; 3) biased and/or contextually ignorant content moderators who allow hate speech to spread.

As a result, Meta has allowed its platforms to be used as tools of genocide against ethnic Tigrayans. Tigrayans deserve to be protected. Furthermore, Meta owes Tigrayans a detailed explanation of why it has chosen the policy of inaction amid an ongoing civil war with verified ethnic-based profiling, hate attacks, and gruesome atrocities.
