I am a passionate agriculturalist; I have worked in many parts of Ethiopia. Farmers are one of the largest most resilient groups in Ethiopia and are simultaneously a group who are continuously marginalized. The dire effects of the war in Tigray on farmers:
1) 2020 brought devastating locust swarms and in 2021, left over produce was looted. Farmers were systematically displaced out of their farm lands & forcibly immobilized. 2) The Rural livelihood labor & safety nets are available in all other parts of ETH but denied in Tigray.
3) Currently, improved seeds developed at Mekelle University under my leadership and fertilizers and pesticides that were prepared for this farming season could not be distributed correctly. The farmers and their plants are multi-stage attack victims.
4) Oxen killed & farm tools burned. Tigrea farmers known for their innovation & adaptation, broke the ploughing taboo with donkeys. They have been denied food,farm resources and seeds; mind-boggling….when will this stop? @EU_Commission@WFP_Ethiopia@UN@USAID@FAO@GlobalGsts
